Description

Edomae Sushi: Art, Tradition, Simplicity

Description

Top sushi master Kikuo Shimizu, now 71 years old, reveals the secrets of Edomae sushi, the traditional sushi of Tokyo. By reading this book, you'll learn how real sushi in Tokyo is made, by an artisan sushi chef. Edomae literally means in front of Edo, the old name of Japan's capital city: so you could translate it as Tokyo-Style. In 19th-century Edo, as busy and bustling as today's Tokyo, workers needed quick meals, and sushi made from vinegar-seasoned fish and rice was nutritious and invigorating. Edomae sushi grew in esteem as a unique cuisine, using freshly-caught fish from Tokyo bay. Today, there are few written materials about true Edomae sushi, but its technique and soul have been passed down from chef to chef, maintaining its tradition while evolving through the decades. This book includes dozens of types of sushi, with large pictures and instructive text on each page, explaining the ingredients and techniques of Edomae sushi. The essential accompaniments of sushi fish - wasabi, nori, and rice - are explained in detail, including how and when they are grown and harvested and how to best prepare them across the four seasons.

The Lightning Thief

Description

After learning that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea, Percy Jackson is transferred from boarding school to Camp Half-Blood, a summer camp for demigods, and becomes involved in a quest to prevent a war between the gods.

Mania, Martin shows, has come to be regarded as a distant frontier that invites exploration because it seems to offer fame and profits to pioneers, while depression is imagined as something that should be eliminated altogether with the help of drugs. Bipolar Expeditions argues that mania and depression have a cultural life outside the confines of diagnosis, that the experiences of people living with bipolar disorder belong fully to the human condition, and that even the most so-called rational everyday practices are intertwined with irrational ones. Martin's own experience with bipolar disorder informs her analysis and lends a personal perspective to this complex story. - Developing visions for the Labyrinth The Lightning Thief ebook pdf movement The Interpretation of Dreams Part II (1900) and On Dreams (1901). This collection of twenty-four volumes is the first full paperback publication of the standard edition of The Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud in English.

Last Bus to Woodstock

Description

"[Morse is] the most prickly, conceited, and genuinely brilliant detective since Hercule Poirot." --The New York Times Book Review "YOU DON'T REALLY KNOW MORSE UNTIL YOU'VE READ HIM. . . . Viewers who have enjoyed British actor John Thaw as Morse in the PBS Mystery! anthology series should welcome the deeper character development in Dexter's novels." --Chicago Sun-Times Beautiful Sylvia Kaye and another young woman had been seen hitching a ride not long before Sylvia's bludgeoned body is found outside a pub in Woodstock, near Oxford. Morse is sure the other hitchhiker can tell him much of what he needs to know. But his confidence is shaken by the cool inscrutability of the girl he's certain was Sylvia's companion on that ill-fated September evening. Shrewd as Morse is, he's also distracted by the complex scenarios that the murder set in motion among Sylvia's girlfriends and their Oxford playmates. To grasp the painful truth, and act upon it, requires from Morse the last atom of his professional discipline. "Few novelists write books as intelligent and deliciously frightening as those by Colin Dexter. . . . What Mr. Dexter does so well, so brilliantly, is weave a thick, cerebral story chock-full of literary references and clever red herrings." --The Washington Times "A MASTERFUL CRIME WRITER WHOM FEW OTHERS MATCH." --Publishers Weekly

P. G. Wodehouse: The Mating Season: (Jeeves & Wooster)

The Mating Season: (Jeeves & Wooster)

Description

This is a Jeeves and Wooster novel. At Deverill Hall, an idyllic Tudor manor in the picture-perfect village of King's Deverill, impostors are in the air. The prime example is man-about-town Bertie Wooster, doing a good turn to Gussie Fink-Nottle by impersonating him while he enjoys fourteen days away from society after being caught taking an unscheduled dip in the fountains of Trafalgar Square. Bertie is of course one of nature's gentlemen, but the stakes are high: if all is revealed, there's a danger that Gussie's simpering fiancee Madeline may turn her wide eyes on Bertie instead. It's a brilliant plan - until Gussie himself turns up, imitating Bertram Wooster. After that, only the massive brain of Jeeves (himself in disguise) can set things right.

The first ten lies they tell you in high school."Speak up for yourself--we want to know what you have to say." From the first moment of her freshman year at Merryweather High, Melinda knows this is a big fat lie, part of the nonsense of high school. She is friendless, outcast, because she busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, so now nobody will talk to her, let alone listen to her. As time passes, she becomes increasingly isolated and practically stops talking altogether. Only her art class offers any solace, and it is through her work on an art project that she is finally able to face what really Cleopatra's Daughter free ebook happened at that terrible party: she was raped by an upperclassman, a guy who still attends Merryweather and is still a threat to her. Her healing process has just begun when she has another violent encounter with him. But this time Melinda fights back, refuses to be silent, and thereby achieves a measure of vindication. In Laurie Halse Anderson's powerful novel, an utterly believable heroine with a bitterly ironic voice delivers a blow to the hypocritical world of high school. She speaks for many a disenfranchised teenager while demonstrating the importance of speaking up for oneself."Speak "was a 1999 National Book Award Finalist for Young People's Literature.

Should laws about sex and pornography be based on social conventions about what is disgusting? Should felons be required to display bumper stickers or wear T-shirts that announce their crimes? This powerful and elegantly written book, by one of America's most influential philosophers, presents a critique of the role that shame and disgust play in our individual and social lives and, in particular, in the law. Martha Nussbaum argues that we should be wary of these emotions because they are associated in troubling ways with a desire to hide from our humanity, embodying an unrealistic and sometimes pathological wish to be invulnerable. Nussbaum argues that the thought-content of disgust embodies "magical ideas of contamination, and impossible aspirations to purity that are just not in line with human life as we know it." She argues that disgust should never be the basis for criminalizing an act, or play either the aggravating or the mitigating role in criminal law it currently does. She writes that we should be similarly suspicious of what she calls "primitive shame," a shame "at the very fact of human imperfection," and she is harshly critical of the role that such shame plays in certain punishments. Drawing on an extraordinarily rich variety of philosophical, psychological, and historical references--from Aristotle and Freud to Nazi ideas about purity--and on legal examples as diverse as the trials of Oscar Wilde and the Martha Stewart insider trading case, this is a major work of legal and moral philosophy.

Discusses the history, mythos, variations, and three degrees of Reiki at length, and suggests ways to integrate Reiki and magical practice, such as using Reiki energy for psychic development and with candle magic, crystals and herbs. Original. "Full of pace and laughter, bruises and heart. Paul Griffin is the sort of writer you're torn between telling the whole world about and keeping all to yourself." Markus Zusak, author of Printz Honor Winner"The Book Thief" Part III integrates the Integral Enneagram model with Wilber's Integral Hiding from Humanity: Disgust, Shame, and the Law download book Operating System, to the mutual enhancement of both. It especially highlights the value of a more feminine, embodied approach to transformation, the importance of process (not just progress) in inner work, and how to develop our consciousness in a way that sparks our creativity.

Joyce Carol Oates: The Sacrifice

The Sacrifice

Description

'Simply the most consistently inventive, brilliant, curious and creative writer going' Gillian Flynn Best-selling author Joyce Carol Oates blends sexual violence, racism, brutality, and power in her latest incendiary novel. Best-selling author Joyce Carol Oates returns with an incendiary novel that illuminates the tragic impact of sexual violence, racism, brutality, and power on innocent lives and probes the persistence of stereotypes, the nature of revenge, the complexities of truth, and our insatiable hunger for sensationalism. When a fourteen-year-old girl is the alleged victim of a terrible act of racial violence, the incident shocks and galvanises her community, exacerbating the racial tension that has been simmering in this New Jersey town for decades. In this magisterial work of fiction, Joyce Carol Oates explores the uneasy fault lines in a racially troubled society. In such a tense, charged atmosphere, Oates reveals that there must always be a sacrifice - of innocence, truth, trust, and, ultimately, of lives. Unfolding in a succession of multiracial voices, in a community transfixed by this alleged crime and the spectacle unfolding around it, this profound novel exposes what - and who - the "sacrifice" actually is, and what consequences these kind of events hold for us all. Working at the height of her powers, Oates offers a sympathetic portrait of the young girl and her mother, and challenges our expectations and beliefs about our society, our biases, and ourselves. As the chorus of its voices - from the police to the media to the victim and her family - reaches a crescendo, "The Sacrifice" offers a shocking new understanding of power and oppression, innocence and guilt, truth and sensationalism, justice and retribution. A chilling exploration of complex social, political, and moral themes - the enduring trauma of the past, modern racial and class tensions, the power of secrets, and the primal decisions we all make to protect those we love - "The Sacrifice" is a major work of fiction from one of our most revered literary masters.

With down-to-earth language and engaging design, "Zen Doodling" offers a distinctive approach to artistic creativity, and a method for achieving personal serenity. A particularly useful feature of the book is the series of checksheets of style features to look for when analysing texts, which occur at the ends of The Sacrifice download ebook chapters. This study will be of particular interest to undergraduate students interested in stylistic analysis and the accounts of up-to-date analytical methods will also be relevant to advanced students and researchers. Do you find yourself feeling emotionally bruised, upset and confused after being in contact with your mother? Are you left doubting yourself - feeling crazy - as she remembers some incidents totally differently to how you remember them, and denies other events even happened at all? Do you somehow feel like you're not a real person in her company? Does it seem that she gets cross, angry or upset when good things happen in your life? And does she seem happy and energised if you have a trauma or crisis? But maybe that's your imagination, you tell yourself, because of course your own mother isn't going to be glad when you suffer, right? And round and round go your feelings and emotions and half-formed thoughts, till you think you must truly be crazy. And still you end up emotionally bruised and confused and hurt. If this resonates with you, it is possible that your mother has Narcissistic Personality Disorder. You're Not Crazy - It's Your Mother explains what that it is, and what it means to you in your life. It will help you to undertake a journey of recognition and recovery: of moving on, healing, and claiming your own self as the wonderful, vibrant woman you really are.
